What this consultation is for

Ealing Council is asking people what they think about proposed transport and highways improvements along Popes Lane, between the A406 and Rose Gardens. The proposals aim to address issues related to obstructive parking, bus reliability, speeding, and pedestrian safety along this section of the corridor.

Background

Popes Lane experiences recurring operational and safety challenges due to fluctuating parking demand and event activity at Gunnersbury Park. During major events, obstructive parking reduces the carriageway width, forcing London Buses to divert services for safety reasons. At other times, particularly during weekdays, the absence of parked vehicles leads to excessive vehicle speeds, creating an inconsistent and sometimes unsafe street environment.

What would change

To address these issues, the council has developed a proposal with a package of improvements, including:

• Removing obstructive parking to improve safety and maintain bus reliability
• Widening footways to create more space for pedestrians and shared‑use users
• Introducing traffic‑calming features, including horizontal deflection and raised elements, to reduce vehicle speeds
• Providing new and improved crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists to improve safety
• Upgrading junctions and crossings to improve access to Gunnersbury Park
• Enhancing bus stops to support accessibility and service reliability
• Installing rain gardens to improve drainage, manage surface water, and increase greening along the corridor
• Reducing the number of permit holder bays between Gunnersbury Drive and Cedar Grove from 76 to 58, while still accommodating the 57 registered permit holders. Additional capacity is available on nearby streets within the same CPZ.
